This is a nice example of a rare Remington New Model revolving rifle manufactured from 1866 to 1879 with a total quantity estimated at less than 1,000. Built on the frame of the New Model revolver series, these rifles had a slightly longer cylinder and a longer loading lever. This rifle would have been one of the first made having a serial number of 17. It is fitted with the rare 24 inch half round/half octagon barrel marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW MODEL" ahead of the rear sight. It has a German silver blade front sight and a folding leaf rear sight. Casehardened frame and loading lever with the remaining surfaces blue. Matching serial number on the barrel and lower tang. Fitted with a silver plated brass scroll type trigger guard with spur and crescent buttplate on a straight grip stock. Comes in a custom period made wooden case with an extra matching serialized 28 1/2 inch 44 caliber smoothbore barrel.

Fine. The barrel and cylinder retain 30% original blue finish with smooth brown and gray patina on the balance. The frame retains 30% original case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The trigger guard and buttplate retain 70% of the original age darkened silver plating with some edge wear and thinning. The exposed brass has an aged patina. The stock retains 95% original varnish and shows some minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The extra barrel is also fine with 75% original blue finish remaining showing areas thinning to a smooth brown patina. The case is good with some minor dings, dents and scratches.
