Description:

The factory letter and numerous associated research documents discuss the history of the Transitional No. 1 1/2 revolvers, that only approximately 1500 were manufactured, and indicates that both revolvers were shipped on March 2, 1869, in a 250 gun shipment sent to J. W. Storrs in New York City in their current configuration. Both revolvers are Transition Model No. 1 1/2 variants manufactured in the late 1860s with Second Issue frames and First Issue barrels and cylinders. Gun A has the earlier, shorter rib marking ending with the July 1859 patent indicating Smith & Wesson was using up older parts on hand, and gun B has the later, longer marking ending in the November 1865 patent. Both have standard sights and rosewood grips (matching serial numbered on the right panels). They come in a period hardwood case with red velvet lining on the English fitted interior which has a spot for the included Hall & Hubbard .32 short rimfire cartridge box (labeled as containing only 3 of the 50 cartridges). The case lid has a brass plaque inscribed "M Rumforde/H.M.S./3rd Constabulary/Quebec.". No details concerning Rumforde were found, but the police/constabulary systems in the British Empire, and Quebec in particular, underwent many changes in the 19th century due to local and colonial political movements. Quebec's provincial constabulary was created in 1838, and Quebec City's independent municipal force was established in 1858. The Quebec municipal police force was re-organized under the provincial system in 1870 but reverted to a municipal force in 1877.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mostly gray and brown patina, patches of original blue on the frame, patches of mild pitting and oxidation, and scattered minor scratches. The grips are very good with mild dings and marks. Mechanically fine.
