This rifle is an unaltered, totally original Spanish-American War era U.S. Springfield Model 1896 Krag Rifle. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1896/SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" followed by the serial number. The left stock flat has a "JSA/1898" cartouche, and a circled script "P" is behind the trigger guard. The folding ladder sight is graduated 7 to 18 on the ladder and a curved base graduated to 6 on the left side. Most Model 1896s had the original rear sights removed and upgraded at some time during their service life. Completely original Model 1896 Krag rifles with the original 1896 pattern rear sights are scarce. Mounted on a standard smooth walnut stock and handguard. The buttplate has a trapdoor (cleaning kit not included).

Fine. The rifle retains 30% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The receiver retains 60% original case colors. The stock is fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches. The "JSA" cartouche is faint and the circled "P" is crisp. Mechanically excellent.
