Description:

Bullard manufactured various versions of single shot rifles from 1883 to 1890, and overall production is estimated to be limited. These rifles are noted for their smoothness of operation and quality craftsmanship but ultimately failed to gain wide support with shooting clubs despite Bullard's strong promotional efforts which including using factory grounds for shooting club events. Today, Bullard single shot rifles are highly prized among collectors. This rifle is listed by serial number in G. Scott Jamieson's book "Bullard Arms" on page 234. Jamieson's book is included. This example has a target weight barrel with a windage globe front sight. The rifle is also equipped with a Vernier tang sight. The top flat of the barrel at the breech is marked "32/40" along with the two-line address/patent information. The barrel is numbered to the gun. The trigger has a heavy checkered face, the hammer, frame and lever are casehardened, and the Swiss buttplate is nickel plated. Mounted on a nicely figured forearm and stock. The stock has a right-handed cheekpiece.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 60% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The front sight is missing a nut. To the adjusting knob. The hammer, receiver and lever retain 50% original case colors. The buttplate retains 80% original nickel plating. The wood is fine with a few minor handling marks and some smooth forearm checkering. The stock checkering has been recut. Mechanically excellent.
