Description:

Second Type S.C. Robinson Sharps style carbine manufactured by the Confederate government after the purchase of the Robinson factory in Richmond, Virginia, in March 1863. The Confederate government manufactured an estimated 3000 Robinson/Sharps style carbines c. 1863-1864. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "RICHMOND.VA" behind the rear sight. The serial number "2856" is stamped on the rear of the lock plate and on the top of the upper receiver tang and written in pencil on the inside of the forearm. The carbine generally resembles the Model 1859 Sharps Carbine with several significant differences: the front sight is tapered iron, the rear sight is a fixed V-notch, the receiver has no provision for a Lawrence pellet primer, the lock plate has a lower profile, the sling bar is attached to an iron plate has into the left side of the stock and the edge of the receiver and the stock does not have a patch box. The forearm has a brass barrel band. The stock is fitted with a sling swivel and brass buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut. Workmanship on Robinson/Richmond Sharps carbines is relatively crude compared to Hartford Sharps carbines. The Robinson/Richmond Sharps carbines were important Confederate weapons. Original examples are rare and inevitably display the effects of hard wartime service.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The iron components have a dark age patina. The surface of the barrel is mostly smooth with scattered dents and light handling marks. The top of the rear sight blade is battered. The "RICHMOND VA" barrel markings are clear. The receiver has a gray brown patina with numerous dents and handling marks but no pitting with evidence of a repair in the upper tang around the screw. The serial numbers are crisp. The top of the lever key is broken. The face of the hammer is battered, and there is heavy flash pitting on the breechblock, percussion nipple and front face of the receiver. The brass barrel band is in good condition with an attractive patina; the brass buttplate is covered with small dents and scratches. The stock is a replacement from a Model 1863 Hartford carbine. The left side of the stock is stamped with a faint "DFC" ribbon inspection mark found on Sharps metallic conversion carbines. The refinished, repaired forearm is also fair and is probably original. This is a solid representative example of a rare Confederate S.C. Robinson carbine.
