Description:

Manufactured in 1848 with the distinctive First Model oval cylinder stops and brass square back trigger guard. The top of the barrel flat is marked "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY". The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S/PATENT/U.S." The cylinder has the scarce variant marking "U.S. DRAGOONS" (partially visible) along with the usual "COLT'S PATENT" markings and Ranger and Indian fight scene. The complete matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and back strap. The cylinder pin and loading lever are marked "931" and the number "9" is visible on the wedge. Colt manufactured approximately 5,000 First Model Dragoons. Most of the U.S. Contract First Model Dragoon revolvers were issued to the 1st and 2nd Dragoon Regiments and the U.S. Mounted Rifles. These units saw hard service on the expanded western frontier following the Mexican War. Surviving First Model Dragoon revolvers with any original finish are very scarce.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some mild flash pitting on the cylinder. The cylinder scene is mostly visible and the U.S. Dragoons marking is faint, but legible. The remaining markings on the cylinder and on the revolver are clear. The trigger guard and back strap retain 20% original age darkened silver plating, mainly in the area of the trigger guard bow and on the top of the back strap. The grip is fair with a small chip on each toe, wear on the lower edges, three minor cracks. (1 on the left side, and 2 on the right) at the top, and overall some minor dents and dings. The action is fine.
