Description:

Both of these revolvers were manufactured in 1906 and feature beautiful Cuno Helfricht scrollwork on the barrel, frame and cylinder flats. The scrollwork on these revolvers is the most recognizable pattern to Helfricht's work. The trigger guard and butt have a zigzag line and dot designs. Factory records show that about 25 New Police and about 6 New Police target revolvers were factory engraved. The left side of the frame to gun "A" has a round panel with a floral design in it, and on the "B" revolver there is an intertwined "GH" monogram. According to the accompanying letter it is believed that the "A" revolver also had the monogram and that it was replaced with the floral design. Each revolver has the transition feature of "POLICE/POSITIVE" marked barrels and the "COLT/NEW POLICE" marking on the left side of the frame. The model designation is traditionally found on the left barrel side, not the right side. The revolvers have blade front and frame notch rear sights, nickel finish, and niter blue hammer, trigger and screw heads, and fitted with pearl grips with rare relief carved American eagle on the right panel. According to the included factory letter, both revolvers were shipped to the renowned sporting goods dealer Lengerke & Detmold of New York City on 4 January 1906. The letter describes the guns as having 4 inch barrels in .32 police, nickel finish, eagle motif carved pearl grips, factory engraved with the "GH" on the side plates and the roll marking left off the barrels. Both revolvers are fully described and illustrated on pages 384-387 of Robert Lee and R.L. Wilson's "The Art of the Gun: Magnificent Colts, Vol. II" and revolver "B" is described and illustrated on pages 334-335 of R.E. Hable and R.L. Wilson's "Colt Pistols, 1836-1876." Provenance: R.E. Hable, David S. Woloch, and Robert Lee.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 95% original nickel finish with some minor flaking on the grip straps and some very small areas of minor oxidation. 75% of the original bright niter blue finish remains on the hammer and trigger with some minor spotting. The grips are also excellent with only light handling marks. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
