Description:

This lot consists of not one but two rare Smith & Wesson Model 3 American Transition Model Revolvers. Each revolver is accompanied by a factory letter. Both revolvers were shipped together on February 8, 1872, to the offices of M.W. Robinson in New York City. For over 50 years (1869-1920) M.W. Robinson was S&W's largest distributor worldwide and a close friend of D.B. Wesson and his sons. The Transition Model serial number range is from approximately 6800-8000. These models are distinguished by a shorter 1.423-inch cylinder and a notch in the hammer for the interlocking barrel catch. The revolvers have the high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame and cylinder. The hammers and trigger guards are casehardened. The top of the barrel ribs are stamped with the one-line address/patent dates information with Maltese crosses at either end. The serial numbers are stamped on the butts, rear cylinder faces, barrels, barrel latches and right grip panels. The case holds both revolvers and a cartridge block containing 53 rounds. The case key is included. Among knowledgeable, long term Smith & Wesson collectors only two sets of Smith & Wesson Americans are known to exist.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retain 70% plus original high polish blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. Over 95% original case colors remain on the hammer and trigger guard. The grips are excellent and have minimal handling wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good showing a crack on the lid and some minor handling/storage marks and some minor high spot wear to the lining.
