Description:

Manufactured in 1891. This is an example of a First Model Winchester Model 1890 slide action rifle with the concealed locking lugs and solid casehardened frame. The First Model variant was only manufactured from 1890 to 1892. The rifle has a dovetail blade front sight and a notch rear sight. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "22 W.R.F." at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model/patent marking, and the lower tang has the serial number. On the first models the serial number was on the lower tang only. Mounted with a 12 groove forearm and smooth straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The included factory letter confirms the caliber. The serial number was applied on 22 October 1891, the rifle was received in warehouse on 11 November 1891, and it was shipped on 19 November 1891 on order number 15436.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel and magazine tube retain 50% plus faded original blue finish showing thinning to a brown. There are tool marks near the rear sight with evidence of cold blue touch up. The frame retains areas of silvered out original case colors, otherwise a smooth gray patina. The buttplate has a mottled gray patina with a series of minor scratches. The refinished wood is very good with a couple minor gouges and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically excellent. Additional Information: this rifle has had a barrel liner installed.
