Manufactured in 1927 and features factory floral scroll patterns on the rear barrel sides, frame, trigger guard and cylinder flats. The two line address/patent dates are marked on top of the barrel and "OFFICERS MODEL 38" flanked by Maltese crosses amid the engraving on the left side. The Rampant Colt in an oval is marked on the left side of the frame. The accompanying factory letter verifies the caliber, barrel length, blue finish with grips as "Not Listed", factory engraving and that it was shipped as 1 to J.A. Johnston in Pittsburg, Pa. on June 6, 1927. There is an interesting story with these revolvers. The consignor acquired a matched pair of Colt target revolvers in the case, one was this revolver, and the other a non-engraved .22 caliber revolver. Upon looking through the case, he found the factory letters for this revolver (serial number 535733) and for the "B" revolver, (serial number 8846), but it wasn't the revolver in the case. A number of years later the consignor found the .22 Officers Model #8846 in a catalog from RIAC and bought it so that the original pair would be back together. The pair come in a hardcase with hunter green velvet lining and "Colt's Revolvers" and "This Medallion" labels on the inside of the lid. In the case are 2 oilers, two shooting medals, manuals, a Colt patch, a caliber gauge, a screwdriver, a pair of aluminum grip panels, and cleaning brush attachments.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% plus original blue finish with muzzle and high point wear, a cylinder drag line and scattered thinning with some areas of smooth brown and gray patina. The slightly undersized replacement grips are fine and have a few minor nicks, dings, and some minor wear and bruising in the otherwise crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are clear. The action is excellent. The case is good with some moderate to heavy wear, some tears and some fabric loss. The lining shows some staining and wear. The accessories are good or better.
