Description:

The back action locks are marked "LYON & LYON," and the barrels are marked "LYON & LYON 16 CHOWRINGHEE ROAD CALCUTTA" (left) AND "J LYON LATE WITH JAS PURDEY & SONS LONDON." (right) and have a beaded blade front sight, 50 yard fixed notch rear sight and folding 100 yard and 150 yard leaves. The address dates the gun to 1896 at the earliest. Lyon became an agent for Joseph Lang & Sons in 1897, and the rifle matches others by that firm but lacks any of their maker's markings. The underside of the barrel have British proofs, "12,"G191P," and "P137P" at the breech flats, and "22343" by the forearm lug. The water table has "crown/V" proofmarks, and "625" is engraved on the lower tang. The engraving consists primarily of tight English scrollwork. It has a Jones underlever. The forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered walnut. The butt has a shadow line cheekpiece, silver initial shield, hard rubber buttplate/spacer, and a red recoil pad. Sling eyes are on the bottom of the stock and barrels. The chambers are 3 inches deep and have a shared extractor. The stock has a 1 3/4 inch drop at the comb, 2 1/2 inch drop at the heel, and a 14 inch length of pull.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 85% plus original blue finish and case colors. The case colors are partially silvered on the locks and have faded to gray and brown patina on the lever and lower tang. There are scattered minor scratches and dings throughout and some light spotting. The wood is very good and has a few minor bruises in the otherwise crisp checkering, scattered small scratches, and a few nicks. The recoil pad has hardened and is fairly heavily flaked. The rifle remains mechanically excellent and has crisp markings and engraving patterns.
