Description:

This example was produced in single-sided "Sumpfmuster 43" (swamp pattern, 1943) camouflage, with a series of irregular green and maroon-brown geometric shapes on a tan field, with short green "splinter" lines to further break up the pattern. A finely stitched embroidered Luftwaffe eagle (white thread on a tightly trimmed green patch) is present on the right breast, with leather-tabbed "ZIPP" brand zippers for the two angled collar pockets and a pair of hip pockets, a set of snaps around the bottom hem to convert the bottom into a pair of leg holes, an integral flare gun pouch on the back right side, and a partial green twill inner lining, marked "Gr.IA/L.B.A./N.0-250/1-1660" on the inside of the left breast. Formerly of the George Petersen Collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall, with a few light stains and some mild rust on the buttons. The eagle is of an earlier pattern, 1942 or earlier, and may have been part of old stocks that the manufacturer was still using up. These smocks can be hard to find in any condition and were typically used harshly in nasty conditions, with ones in this condition very few and far between, often hiding in collections for years before returning to the market.
