Description:

Introduced as a wartime simplification of the Stahlhelm, the Model 42 eliminated the rolled lower edges in favor of a light outward flaring. While it would have originally left the factory a flat dark green, many were field-upgraded; this example was fitted with a harness made of thick gauge steel wire suitable for attaching additional camouflage material, like canvas scraps or native plant life, received a tan paint base coat with additional patches of green and brown, and then peppered with a few handfuls of local dirt or sand to roughen up the surface and provide texture. While this specific helmet is not documented, this style of camouflage is associated with the Nazi Occupation forces assigned to the defense of the Normandy beaches and surrounding locales. The lower portion of the interior has also been covered with the tan base coat, partially filling in the "66" marking in the rear and covering the markings on the side, with "Jung" added in white paint, a brown chinstrap with a faint "1942" maker's mark, and tan leather webbing. Jung has not been identified, though the lettering, with a simplified "fraktur"-style appearance, suggests a German hand holding the paintbrush.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, showing a few light scuffs and handling marks overall. The wire harness is solid, with the paint wearing off the high edges and some mild rubbing on the helmet beneath it. The right front edge of the skirt shows a light "ripple", most visible on the interior, possibly a factory error overlooked during inspection.
