Description:

This is just an exceptionally rare and certainly one of only 6 of the early post war efforts of the Canadian Government to develop a lightweight Inglis 9mm Browning High Power pistol. This effort was undertaken in late 1947 that was intended to reduce the carry weight of the Inglis high power pistol from appropriately 34 ounces to 25.5 ounces. The initial efforts were centered on two aspects, one was to utilize a new frame material which was T75S aluminum and the other was to perform various lightening cuts on the slide. After the initial discussion, the Canadian Arsenal manufactured "6" test samples in total, with two being retained in Canada; two were shipped to the UK and two to the U.S. These initial six samples were made from standard aluminum bar stock to help reduce the costs along with the modified slides. These slide modifications consisted of making several milling cutouts on each side of the slide with a larger one on top of the slide in front of the rear sight. The two documented Inglis pistol that were sent to the U.S. were "8T2367 and 8T2326". The first example is currently retained at the Springfield Armory museum and the second example is this exact pistol. These two samples were initially held in reserve; however, based on reviewing this example it probably only saw very limited firing. During testing of this model the "aluminum" frame did not hold up very well at all for two reasons: 1) it suffered battering in the barrel locking area of the frame and 2) it showed heavy corrosion during the salt spray testing. This heavy battering of the cross-pin during the endurance firing caused the frame to crack or at least show heavy deformation due to the continual recoil. To help combat this problem they eventually developed the use of a larger/heavier steel cross-pin through the frame that had a larger contact area as well as additional/heavier "staking" around the trigger pin, both were an attempt to improve the defect with aluminum frames. Eventually the Canadian Government did manufactured 50 more test pistols using a new improved "cast" aluminum frame; however, those did not proved to be any better and the whole concept was eventually dropped in the late 1960s. These initial "six" test pistols did not have any serial number on the frame and can be identified only by the serial number on the slide and barrel, both of which are matching numbered "8T2326". This specific pistol is listed by serial number in Clive Law's new book "Inglis Diamond" page 171. The color of the finish in the milled out areas correctly match the rest of the slide indicating Inglis modification and the actual factory markings "BROWNING FN 9MM HP INGLIS CANADA" on the left side are below the milled out panels, further indicating the modifications were done by the Inglis factory. The pistol is fitted with the correct/original military style parts such as the ring hammer, lanyard ring on the lower left side of the butt, with unique, original and correct Inglis checkered walnut grips as shown in all illustrations found in the various references. This specific model of pistol is described in Blake Stevens book on Inglis-Browning Hi-Power pistols and it comes with one original magazine.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% of the phosphate finish on the slide with only minor edge and high spot wear and the frame also has 97% of the original black factory paint. The grips are in good condition. Mechanically excellent. An extraordinary opportunity you don't want to miss!
