Description:

Consisting of a jacket, shirt, trousers and garrison-style cap, this uniform set is outfitted for a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Service, one of the forerunner organizations to the modern United States Air Force. Originally a section of the Signal Corps, the air assets of the Army were made into a semi-independent service under General Pershing during World War I, and afterwards were granted the status of a full and proper combat arm of the Army. The jacket is constructed from brown wool twill with brass buttons marked to the Scoville Manufacturing Company of Waterbury and a tag from "Better Class Tailoring" beneath the collar, dated June 24, 1918 and signed for "Mr. P. Laguardia". (It would take further research to check whether he is a relative to Fiorello Laguardia, as a WWI pilot and later mayor of New York City.) A set of brass "US" and Air Service insignia buttons are mounted on the collar, with a set of cloth wings (white embroidered on black felt) over a green-on-tan felt Staff Sergeant patch (with Air Service Device) on the right sleeve, and a red discharge chevron and a gold Overseas Service chevon on the left. The trousers are of the 'riding breech' style, with a 1917-dated tag for C. Kenyon & Company of New York on the back of one of the pockets and "7-32x32" and "97428" ink stamped on the interior, with mixed metal and bakelite buttons and green laced ankles. The shirt is brown twill, with a faded tag near the bottom, reinforced elbows, and mixed buttons. The cap is unmarked, with an Air Service pin on the front left. Sergeant Laguardia has not been identified.

Rating Definition:
