Description:

This is a very fine example of a WWI "Remington-UMC" U.S. Army Model 1911 contract pistol. These Remington-UMC pistols were manufactured in the 1918/19 time frame in their own serial number block from "1 to 21676". During manufacture, the Remington Arms-U.M.C. Co. used their own set of technical drawings that did not conform to those used by Colt or the U.S. Government. Consequently most of these pistols were disposed of after WWI due to the standardization requirements for part interchangeability with the Colt manufactured Model 1911 pistols, making surviving example fairly rare to find. The left side of the slide is marked in two blocks "PATENTED DEC.19.1905/FEB.14.1911.AUG.19.1913./COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO." followed by "MANUFACTURED BY/REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT. CONN.U.S.A.", with the circled, "REMINGTON/UMC" logo between the two blocks. The right side is marked "MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER .45". The left side of the frame extension is stamped with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and the final U.S. Government inspector's initials "E.E.C." over an "Eagle Head/E28" Ordnance inspection proof. The right side of the frame is stamped with serial number "NO 5842". The top of the barrel over the chamber area is stamped with a "P" proofmark and no other proofmarks. The rear of the slide above the firing pin stop is stamped with a single letter "E" provisional inspection mark and so is the left side of the trigger guard bow. The rear side of the trigger guard bow is numbered "39". It is complete with one two-tone, unmarked blued magazine

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 75% of its original blue/black wartime finish, edge and high spot wear overall, the top of the slide browning and showing spotting overall. The front grip strap blue is also flaking off in areas with most of the blue on the mainspring housing gone. The grips are in fine condition with a nice medium colored oil finish on both sides, and nice distinct checkering showing only minor handling marks mixed with a few nicks or dings. Mechanically excellent.
