Description:

Offered here are items from the collection of OSS Major James Goodwin (1918-1999) who operated in Yugoslavia during World War II and received the Purple Heart, Legion of Merit and British Military Cross. The collection contains the following: 1) A cotton Special Operations Executive (SOE) armband with cotton Union Jack flag patch; 2) British parachutist's wings in blue and white thread on tan cotton; 3) gold bullion OSS Operations Commando patch on black cloth; 4) an original carbon copy of a secret OSS "Report of Flotsam Mission" written by James Goodwin which details combined operations in Slovenia between OSS agents and locals; 5) a 6 July 1945 dated memorandum from James Goodwin to Lt. Commander Shaheen, USNR discussing the effects of underwater explosives; and 6) a 12 January 1962 dated black and white photograph of Supreme Allied Commander, NATO General Lauris Norstad and Col. James Goodwin of the 11th Engineer Group, Mannheim, Germany. After a year of German occupation, resistance forces in Yugoslavia began to receive allied covert assistance. The British and Americans parachuted special agents into Yugoslavia to assist the local insurgents. Operations were controlled by the British SOE. Beginning in 1944 and lasting until the end of the war, Operation Flotsam supplied the insurgence through the use of air drops. While serving with the OSS, a SOE colleague of Goodwin's was Major Randolph Churchill, son of the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Goodwin later saw action in Korea and was part of a small group of men who formed U.S. Special Forces. He retired from the Army in 1962.
