Description:

William Turvey was active in the early to mid 18th century. He became a Master of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1733 and supplied the Honorable East India Company starting in 1741. Several of his finest firearms are part of the UK's royal and national collections. The early "banana" style locks are marked "W. TURVEY" and lightly engraved. The pans are integral, and the frizzens are bridleless. The three stage barrels have blade front sights, bands at the transition points and breeches, and a fluer-de-lis over "WT" maker's mark and the "crown/GP" and "crown/V" London Gunmakers' Company proof and view marks on the left sides at the breeches. The barrel tangs are engraved and have dished rear sights. The side plates are brass and have an acanthus scrollwork pattern. The ornate thumb plates have shields with a series of crosses at the center, floral accents at the tops and bottoms, and "V" markings below the shields. The trigger guard and frizzen spring finials also have floral patterns. The pommel caps have grotesque faces on the butts and floral engraving on the tendrils. The stocks are finely shaped and have attractive raised flats with tear drop tips, raised floral carving by the ramrod entry pipes, and raised shaping around the barrel tangs.

Rating Definition:

Good with gray patina and light pitting throughout on the iron, faint engraving patterns and markings, and attractive aged patina on the brass. The re-oiled and repaired stock is also fine and has a spliced repair along the upper edges of the forend on each side, some small chips and nicks at the edges, and light scratches and storage marks. Mechanically fine.
