Description:

By the time these pistols were manufactured around the 1850s, dueling would have been technically illegal in France for over 200 years. Nonetheless, duels continued to be part of French elite society into the 20th century. The locks are marked "LABOURIER ARQR A CARPENTRAS" in an arch. Most of the metal surfaces other than the barrels have floral engraving. The barrels were Liege proofed on the left flats. The barrels are rifled as was customary for French dueling pistols. This pair has very crisp, non-set triggers which further aid accuracy while negating the risk of negligent discharge that accompanies single set triggers. The rear sights are fixed to ensure both have the same regulated sights. The trigger guards are hooked to help steady their aim, and the fluted and floral scroll carved stocks point naturally. They come in a walnut case with navy blue velveteen lined interior and the following Belgian retailer markings inside the lid in gold: "MANUFACTURE D'ARMES A FEU," several emblems, "J. B. HANQUET," and "LIEGE-BELGIQUE." The case contains these accessories: wooden mallet, screwdriver with wooden handle, unmarked powder flask, cap box, oiler, ramrod, cleaning rod, and a key.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 90% plus of the bright high polish period refurbished blue finish and displays edge wear and patches of brown patina. One of the German silver wedge plates is slightly bent, and both are aged. The lock cross screw washer has traces of niter blue finish. The balance of the metal surfaces have a fairly smooth French gray appearance, crisp engraving, and some areas of light spotting. The stock is very fine and has scattered scratches and small dings and crisp carving. Mechanically excellent.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 95% plus of the period refurbished high polish blue finish with mild edge wear (including some denting of the edges under the finish) and some small spots of brown patina. The lock cross screw washer has 75% of the niter blue finish. The wedge plates have an aged patina. The remaining components have an even French gray and some light spotting. The stock is very good with scattered minor dings and small scratches, crisp carving, and a few small flakes. Mechanically fine. The case is fine and has mild storage type wear overall and some tears and chips on the otherwise fine interior, and the accessories are all fine.
