Manufactured in 1924, this is truly a rare example of a special order Winchester semi-deluxe Model 1894 carbine with nickel plated brass barrel bands and Swiss buttplate. According to a Model 1894 records survey conducted by Gael Oswalt and John Hawk, only five Model 1894 carbines with Swiss buttplates and only 493 Model 1894 carbines with pistol grip stocks were cataloged. Photocopies of excerpts from the survey are included. This carbine (951408) is not listed by serial number among the Model 1894s that were studied because records after serial number 353,999 are nonexistent. The writer believes that this is a factory original special order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1894 lever action carbine with Swiss buttplate. The number "177" is stamped on the inside of the buttplate, upper tang stock cut-out, butt and right side of upper tang. There are also two small dots marked by the "177" marking on the upper tang. These small dots could possibly indicate a type of special feature. It has beaded blade Marble front and folding ladder rear sights, checkered forearm and pistol grip stock and hard rubber Winchester grip cap. The Winchester factory barrel legend is marked on the left side, and the Winchester factory oval proof is marked on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech.

Very fine. The carbine retains 60% plus original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The barrel bands and buttplate retain 90% plus original nickel plating. The wood is fine with a gouge near the toe, a number of minor handling marks and some worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is a rare special order Winchester Model 94 saddle ring carbine with Swiss buttplate that is undoubtedly missing from nearly all Winchester collections.
