Description:

This is an example of a late production Henry rifle manufactured in 1866 and serial numbered very close to the end of production of the Henry rifle. This rifle has the distinctive Henry brass receiver and buttplate with 24 inch octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The stock is straight grain American walnut. The rifle has the late production features which include straight back nickel silver front sight blade, beveled magazine follower cut in the receiver and Second Style buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The rifle has a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The left side of the stock is fitted with a sling swivel, and the left side of the barrel has a screw-fastened loop for a sling hook. The sling swivel and hook loop were standard on late production Henry rifles. The buttplate has a hinged brass trap door, (cleaning rod not included). The top of the barrel is marked with the Second Style New Haven Arms Co. legend introduced about serial number 4000, "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT." ahead of the rear sight and is larger than the legend found on early Henry rifle barrels and has all serif letters. The top of the barrel is stamped with the serial number "12133" between the rear sight and the receiver. The matching serial number is also stamped on the inside of the buttplate toe, on the left side of the lower tang (under stock wrist) and in the upper stock tang slot. The buttplate and stock screws are correctly not serial numbered.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The barrel/magazine tube have a crisp smooth mottled gray patina. The hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina. The brass components have a natural aged patina. The stock is fine showing some scattered minor dents and dings. The first line of the barrel address is faint (factory error), otherwise the markings are clear. The action is fine.
