Description:

This is an example of one of only approximately 1,500 lever action Navy Pistols with an 8 inch barrel that was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company between 1855 and 1857. The top barrel flat is marked "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN FEB. 14. 1854" The matching serial number is marked on the right side of the lever, left side of the frame under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel, (in pencil). It has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass frame and the lever with round finger hole. The barrel/magazine had a blue finish, the hammer and lever were casehardened. The pistol has a brass cone front sight on the barrel and a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight mounted on the receiver. Fitted with smooth varnished walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The crisp edged barrel has been cleaned some time ago and has a smooth brown appearance with a very small area of minor pitting in the area of the address. The hammer and lever have a smooth brown patina. The very fine crisp brass has an attractive aged patina. The grips are also fine with most of the original varnish remaining, and showing some wear and minor nicks on the lower edges, and overall some minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The lever is a bit loose, otherwise the action functions fine.
