Description:

Colt Model 1862 Pocket Model of Navy Caliber revolver manufactured circa 1863. The revolver has the distinctive loading cut-out with hinged loading lever and rebated, five-shot cylinder roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The barrel has a brass cone front sight and the hammer has bordered knurling on the spur. The barrel and cylinder have the Colt commercial blue finish, the loadings lever, frame and hammer are color case-hardened and the brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The one piece walnut grip has a high polish piano finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. "COLTS/PATENT" is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame and "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The full serial number, "19818" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "9818" is stamped on the cylinder below the "COLTS PATENT" marking. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is contained in a mahogany American style case with five compartments lined with black velvet. The case contains: (1) sealed 250 count tin of Eley percussion caps for Colt's Repeating Rifles in the blue paper wrapping. (2) blued, iron, straight leg, double cavity, bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "36P." on the right mold block, (3) blued, L-shape, combination nipple wrench/screw-driver, (4) pocket pistol powder flask with fixed charger and eagle and shield design above "E. PLURIBUS. UNUM." on both sides of the flask, (5) sealed packet of five Hazard's cartridges for "NEW MODEL/REVOLVING/POLICE PISTOL" and (6) key.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver is all original and retains 70% of the blue and color casehardened finish. The cylinder has nearly all of the Holdup scene intact. The cylinder pins are battered but the percussion nipples and rear portion of the cylinder show minimal flash pitting. The loading lever, frame and hammer show strong case colors with a few spots of age discoloration on the right side of the frame. The brass trigger guard and back strap retain about 20% of the silver-plated finish in protected areas. The walnut grip is in very good overall condition and retains about 80% of the original varnish finish with scattered, minor, handling marks. The action is crisp but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. The case is in very good condition; the exterior shows only very limited handling wear and the interior is clean and bright with a few minor compression marks. The powder flask is in excellent condition and has nearly all of the brown lacquer finish on the body and gold-plated finish on the top and charger. The percussion cap tin and cartridge packet are in very fine condition. The screw-driver and bullet mold are in good overall condition with moderate wear. This is a very good example of a scarce, factory cased, Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy revolver.
