Description:

Introduced in 1881, this early production, three digit serial numbered Smith & Wesson .44 Double Action revolver features New York engraving, certainly in the Nimschke style if not by L.D. Nimschke himself. The nearly full coverage engraving is comprised of scrollwork that incorporates geometric patterns such as zig zag lines and diamonds. Matching serial numbers are found on the butt, rear cylinder face, barrel and barrel latch. The top of the barrel rib has the two-line address/patent marking. It has a pinned half-moon front and notch rear sights and plain two-piece pearl grips. The hammer and trigger are casehardened, the trigger guard is blue, and the remaining surfaces are nickel plated.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains 85% plus of the original engraved nickel finish with the balance a smooth bright gray patina mixed with some light flaking. The hammer and trigger retain 80% original case colors, and the trigger guard retains 95% original blue finish. The grips are also very fine with a small shallow chip missing near the top of the right panel and highly attractive color. Mechanically excellent.
