Manufactured for the U.S. military circa 1876-77 with a total production of approximately 5,934. The revolver is marked with the two line address/patent dates on the left side of the ejector housing flanked by elongated Maltese crosses. The right side of the ejector housing is marked "+SCHOFIELD'S PAT. JUNE 20TH 71 APR. 22D 1873+". The butt is marked "U.S." along with the serial number "7091". The rear cylinder face is stamped with the matching serial number and Ordnance sub-inspector's "W" and "P", which are also marked on the bottom flat of the ejector housing. The top of the back strap is period stamped with the number "173", possibly a rack or inventory number. The grips are smooth walnut with the Ordnance inspector's script initials cartouche "DAL" under the date "1877" on the left side and "CW" on the right side. The serial number "7291" is stamped on the inside of the right panel. Writer believes that this was an error at the factory. Many Schofield revolvers were issued to the 4th Cavalry which saw service in the Geronimo Campaign, the famous 9th and 10th U.S. Cavalry comprised of the "Buffalo Soldiers" stationed in the American Southwest and famous people such as the James Brothers, Cole Younger, U.S. Marshall Bill Tilghman and Chief Scout for Custer "Lonesome Charley" Reynolds were known to carry Schofield revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 50% original blue finish concentrated mainly on the receiver, in the cylinder flutes and protected areas of the barrel. There is a smooth brown patina on the balance. There is some original dull case colors visible on the hammer, and the trigger guard has a smooth gray patina. The grips are very fine with a couple of small minor gouges and overall some minor dents and nicks. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
