Hudson's Bay Company 1868 Dated Barnett Flintlock Northwest Trade Gun

This representative example of a late period Northwest gun was is dated "1868" at the tail of the lock behind "BARNETT" which is in a slight arch. The center of the lock has the classic tombstone sitting fox looking left emblem over "EB." The barrel has the same sitting fox emblem on top and English proofs, a flag proof, and crown of "J.E.B." (John Edward Barnett) on the upper left flat. The tombstone fox logo with "EB" is for Edward Bond who inspected arms for the Hudson's Bay Company. The same mark was used on Hudson's Bay Company trade guns through the late 19th century and is based on the company's logo. Barnett supplied firearms to both the famous Northwest Company and Hudson Bay Company. The barrel is three stage with one "wedding band" and brass blade and notch sights. It also features the standard serpentine side plate, large two finger trigger and trigger guard, tear drop flats and tang carving, and a flat brass buttplate secured by five screws. Northwest Trade Guns were used across North America by various Native Americans for hunting and in many conflicts with one another, Europeans, and Americans. The same basic design was fired at Americans during our fight for independence and a century later against Custer's men at Little Bighorn. The consignor indicated this gun is from the Barbee House Museum.

ConditionGood with dark brown and gray patina, mild pitting, and minor oxidation on the iron; aged patina on the brass, scattered ding and marks, and mostly clear markings. The stock is very good and has numerous scattered dings and scrapes, a circular impression on the right side of the butt, and some small chips. The lock needs a new mainspring.
