Description:

This rifle lack's visible signatures on the lock and barrel but has "JP" in raised relief carving on the left side of the butt. A slightly different "P" carved design was used on the rifle also signed "J Pringle" on the lock shown on page 118 of "Bedford, Somerset and Fulton County Gunsmiths" by Whisker, and the patch box and other attributes also closely match his work and that of the Bedford School. Notice the essentially combless stock, carved tear drop flats on the wrist, filed line in the tail of the lock, and the overall slender build. The Bedford region maintained designs generally found nowhere else and continued making distinctive rifles throughout the 19th century even as other areas switched over to near styles. They also continued to hand make and alter locks like the one on this rifle much longer than most other regions despite the availability of ready made locks from importers and dedicated lock makers.

Rating Definition:

Fair as restored. The barrel has extensive deep pitting overall and an artificial dark patina. The lock is mostly a smooth brown with less pitting. The silver and brass exhibit aged patinas. The silver wedge plates are more recent additions, and the second wedge is absent. There are some carefully spliced repairs around the lock. The patch box finial has been repaired near the hinge, and the door was replaced and engraved to match. The refinished stock also has some mended hairline cracks, some small chips, fresh finish, attractive flame figure, and mostly distinct carving. The lock and set triggers need some work but are functional.
