Description:

Henry Lechler was active from the late 1700s to 1840s, first in Lancaster and then in Carlisle. He was also the superintendent at Springfield Armory for a brief period starting in 1813. The top of the barrel is marked "o+LECHLER+o" and is fitted with traditional blade and notch sights. The "LECHLER" portion of the marking was done with the same die-stamp found on some other Lechler rifles, and the silver hunter's star inlay, thumb plate, lock plate, and side plate are all similar to some of those on other Lechler marked rifles. The patch box and stock do not match his work. There is simple engraving on the cock, tail of the lock, toe plate, thumb plate, and cheekpiece inlay.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel and reconverted lock have dark artificial brown patina overall. There are areas of minor pitting and oxidation. The brass and silver have aged patina. The refinished and likely replacement stock has an applied faux flame figure and crude shaping that is both visible and easily felt. There are also scattered scratches and small chips, a repaired break below the lock, a chip above the cock, crack in the left flat, smoothed incised curl carving by the ramrod entry pipe, and cracking along the forend.
