Description:

Also known as the "Russo-Japanese Sword" due to its use in that conflict, the kyu-gunto marks the mid-point between the European-style military swords adopted by Japan in the post Admiral Perry years and the more traditionally Japanese shin-gunto swords of the later Imperial years, showing influence from both traditions. Overall length is 32 1/2 inches, with a 24 1/2 inch blade with a slightly wavy hamon and well developed grain, set in a striped and gilt copper habaki and an elongated hilt with European style pierced through "D" handguard, cherry blossom themed decoration, wire wrapped rayskin grip and a nickel finished scabbard. The tang is unsigned, but features a well aged antique patina and three visible mekugi-ana, suggesting an ancestral blade (attributed by the consignor to the Koto Era, pre-1599) that was re-mounted and possibly shortened to conform to military regulations.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The very fine blade shows a few splits in the skin, mostly concentrated on the upper third, with some minor edge chips and attractive grain and color overall. The furniture is fine with mild wear, traces of gilt finish in the protected areas and some mild spotting and frosting on the scabbard.
