Description:

This is a very fine example of an early Bergmann Model 1896 Number 2 semi-automatic pistol in the very scarce 5 mm Bergmann cartridge. These are very difficult to find as few were produced, with most retained in Europe with a very few brought back after WWII. Theodore Bergmann was a pioneer in developing semi-automatic pistols in Europe in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The left side has an oval shaped logo that is marked "Gaggenau" on top with a mountain man holding a pick with sunrays emanating from behind him with the lower area marked " V.C.S. Suhl". The serial number "1021" is stamped on the right front area of the frame. The back side of each grip panel is numbered in the upper corner in pencil "1021". The lower left side of the frame is stamped "PATENT/BREVET/S.G.D.G.", with the side of the barrel marked with the bore diameter of "611" followed by a "Double Crown/U" proofmark. The upper left side of the frame is also stamped with a small "Double Crown/U" proof. This model was his most successful commercial pistol and has the distinctive flat top bolt and top cover with the thin, lightweight firing pin and the two angled cuts on the right side of the frame. This model has the integral magazine that sits in front of the trigger and loads with stripper clips through the top of the action.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 80% plus of the original blue finish overall showing even honest wear overall with browning on the grip straps and two small spots of pitting on the right, lower front edge of the frame. The grips are in very fine condition overall with a fine checkering on both sides, distinct monogram at the top of each grip, and a very minor light ding/pressure dents on the left side.
