Description:

This extraordinary U.S. Winchester Model 97 Trench Gun was manufactured in 1942. This WWII configuration Model 97 Trench Gun has a takedown receiver with the second pattern, four-hole, hand guard. The shotgun has the correct Winchester quality commercial blue finish. The stock and forearm are both straight grain American walnut with the Winchester low-luster varnish commercial finish. It is fitted with the correct second pattern handguard/bayonet lug with the heavy gauge sling swivel on the side of the bayonet lug, which properly lacks the patent markings found on the earlier WWI bayonet lugs. The stock has a Winchester commercial style hard rubber buttplate embossed with the circular "Winchester Repeating Arms" logo. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line Winchester legend and "Model 97" designation followed by "2 3/4 CHAM./ CYL.". The underside of the barrel is stamped with the date "42", and there is a Winchester "W/P" proofmark stamped on the top of the barrel and the receiver as well as the small "Ordnance/Shell & Flame" inspection mark. The serial number "E/955674" is stamped across the bottom of the receiver and the takedown collar. The lower left side of the receiver is stamped with "U.S." property mark followed by a "Shell & Flame" mark. The left side of the stock is stamped with the boxed initials "G.H.S./a small Ordnance escutcheon". The shotgun is fitted with an unmarked WWII production web sling. The Winchester Model 97 Trench Gun is the classic combat shotgun. Model 97 Trench Guns were widely issued during WWII to all the services but saw most combat use with the Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. These shotguns proved invaluable in close-quarter combat and remained in service until after the Vietnam War. Most of the WWII Model 97 Trench Guns saw extensive service and were subsequently arsenal overhauled and refinished. As a result, WWII Model 97 Trench Guns are scarce in original condition and are seldom found in un-issued condition.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, as issued with 99% plus of the original blue finish overall showing only a very minor hand cycling mark on the magazine tube. The stock and pump handle are also both in excellent condition with 99% of the wood finish with only a couple very minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Truly an exceptional near new, as issued Winchester 1897 trench gun, one that cannot be improved upon!
