Description:

Springfield Armory (SA) M1C Sniper Rifle manufactured in February 1945. The SA manufactured approximately 7,900 M1C rifles between January 1945 and December 1945. Most of the WWII production M1C rifles were overhauled during the Korean War. These over-hauled M1C rifles typically have 1951 or 1952 dated barrels and mis-matched serial numbers on the telescopic sight brackets. The sight bracket on this rifle is serial numbered "3598034" on the bottom with the distinctive flat top "3" utilized by Griffin & Howe when the bases were numbered in 1945. The rifle is fitted with a Korean War barrel marked "S-A-1-52". The receiver heel is stamped "SA-52". The heel marking is typically found on M1C receivers that were plugged and converted to service rifle configuration during the Korean War. Details provided by the consigner indicate that this rifle was verified as an original production M1C rifle by M1C expert Dave McClain in 2004 (this letter is not included with the rifle). The rifle has a Lyman 2.2X M82 Telescopic Sight with tapered post reticle, sliding sun-shade and rubber eyepiece. The scope has a blue finish and is marked: "TELESCOPE M82/SERIAL NO. 41796/STOCK NO.FOO1-0084688" in three lines on the left side of the tube. The elevation and windage knob bases are numbered "7634671" and the windage and elevation knob caps are numbered "7575180". The scope rings and base are blued. The right side of the scope base is stamped with the rifle serial number "3692251". The top of the base is stamped with the Griffin & Howe name and patent markings. The rifle stock is stamped with the Springfield Armory "Open Box/SA" rebuild mark above a Raritan Arsenal "RA" rebuild mark. These markings, along with the "SA-52" stamp on the heel, indicate the rifle may have been converted from M1C to service rifle configuration by SA and subsequently rebuilt or inspected by Raritan Arsenal. The stock grip is stamped with circled serif. "P' proofmark. The rifle has the typical post WWII components which include: T105 rear sight, relief cut "D35382 SA operating rod, rolled lower forearm band pin, poppet valve gas cylinder lock screw and raised boss gas cylinder lock. The rifle has an early, milled trigger guard. The receiver has a post war gray green parkerized finish. The rifle is complete with a post WWII M1 web sling.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as arsenal refinished. The rifle retains 98% of the arsenal gray green parkerized finish. The "SA-52" and M1 Garand nomenclature on the receiver heel are light. The serial number, barrel markings and component drawing numbers are sharp. The stock, handguard and forearm are all in very fine with minimal handling and storage marks. The arsenal inspection and proofmarks are extremely sharp. The M82 telescopic sight is in excellent condition with 98% of the blue finish intact. The optics are excellent. The rings and scope base are in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the original blue finish. Nearly all of the MC1 rifle extant today were over-hauled during or immediately following the Korean War. This is a solid example of a genuine SA M1C Sniper Rifle in typical Korean War configuration.
