Description:

This is late production model 1903 Springfield national match rifle that has been modified by the additional of a Lyman 5A target scope. In the early 1930s there was a considerable effort by target shooters to improve their rifle scores by the additional of various type of rifles scopes for long range target shooting. Several companies were producing early target scopes with all variations being used such as Winchester, Stevens and Lyman. The Winchester A5 was probably the best know at the time and it was produced from approximately 1910 through the early 1930s, when the Lyman Gun Sight Corp purchased the scope patents and manufacturing rights. To differentiate the model from the Winchester version, Lyman designated their scope as the model "5A", although they were almost identical. The rifle receiver has the standard Springfield Armory markings over serial number "1343436" and the barrel is marked "SA/Ordnance Bomb/2-32" which is correct for the rifle serial number. The barrel has the standard 1903 pattern front and rear sight set, with the face of the rear sight correctly polished. It has the standard all milled barrel hands, trigger guard/floor plate and various other components. It is fitted with polished "NS" marked Nickel Steel bolt with the early pattern small gas hole, with the serial number electro-penciled on top. It is currently fitted with a later "C" type, two bolt replacement pistol grip stock that has a single boxed "SA/SPG" cartouche on the left side with a "P" proof in the grip area. The stock is not serial numbered nor does it have a drawing number on the lower toe area. The receiver and stock have both been modified by the addition of a Lyman 48C target sight on the right rear side. However, only the sight base is present with the remaining portion of the sight missing. The scope has been mounted directly on top of the receiver and barrel using a set of Winchester A5/Unertl type scope bases spaced 7.2 inch distance between the bases. The handguard has also been modified accordingly for the front base. The scope is the later pattern, all blued Lyman 5A model that has the standard two-line Lyman Gun Sight Corp. markings on top of the scope tube. It is fitted with the standard Winchester/Lyman target type mounts. It is complete with a WWI pattern leather sling and a WWI type oiler in the butt trap.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as period modified with 95% of the original parkerized finish overall with only edge and high spot wear showing light firing use. The bolt retains its original Springfield Armory bright polished finish. The stock and hand guard are both in very fine condition showing only minor handling marks overall with a clear cartouche and firing proof. The Lyman 5A scope is also in very fine condition with 90% of the blue finish overall showing only minor wear on the scope tube where slide back and forth int eh scope mounts. A very nice looking early target rifle.
