Description:

Manufactured from 1898 to 1905, this model was Marlin's first commercially sold shotgun. Marlin manufactured an estimated 55,000 of these shotguns. These shotguns featured exposed hammers, takedown frames and a receivers which look similar to the larger caliber lever action rifles of Marlin. Single steel bead sight, 2 3/4 inch chamber, and full choke. The top of the barrel near the breech is marked with the two-line address and patent dates. Fine scroll engraved action with zigzag bordering and an oval panel with ducks in a marsh scene on the left side. Scroll engraving on the right side of the receiver and two pigeons in flight on the bolt. The underside of the barrel is marked "54583 F"; the "F" signifies full choke. The barrel numbers on this model did not match the receiver. Mounted with a nicely figured checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a "Marlin" marked serrated buttplate. The stock measurements are: drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; drop at heel 2 1/2 inches; length of pull 13 1/2 inches.

Rating Definition:

Fine. 50% of the bright original high polish blue finish remains on the receiver with high spot and edge wear, some small surface scratches, light to moderate spotting, and sharp engraving. The barrel has a smooth brown/gray patina with strong Damascus patterning, some small nicks around the muzzle, and traces of light spotting. The refinished wood is fine with a visible repaired break around the forearm, well-defined checkering, pressure dents, and rich color. Mechanically very good.
