Description:

Produced in limited quantities at the turn of the century, the Webley-Fosbery uses a novel recoil driven operating system. The pistol is divided into two primary components, an upper frame carrying the barrel, cylinder and the hammer mated to the lower grip frame and single action trigger and disconnector assembly on a spring loaded track. On discharge the recoil energy drives the entire upper frame back along the track recocking the hammer and advancing the cylinder. While this mechanism combines many of the positive features of both a revolver and an automatic pistol, it did not catch on, and the revolver was supplanted by the automatic as the primary sidearm of the military, police and civilians. It has blade front and notch rear sights, the one line Birmingham address on the barrel rib, "WEBLEY FOSBERY" on the left side of the top strap and "455 CORDITE" next to the "winged bullet" trademark on the left side plate of the lower frame. While Wilkinson had stopped producing firearms, they continued to sell, with Webley revolvers being popular items. While no research has been done, the Wilkinson archives may still contain information on the original purchaser. The hammer is checkered on three sides, the cylinder is numbered to the gun, Birmingham proofs on multiple components, a safety switch on the left side of the lower frame, a pair of checkered grips and a lanyard swivel on the butt. The faux leather bound partitioned case is lined in green felt and contains a cartridge block holing 50 cartridges, bore rod with attachments, screwdriver, James Dixon & Sons oiler and an unmarked oiler.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown-gray patina. There are a few small patches of minor pitting. The grips are fair showing a number of minor handling marks, a few gouges in the checkering and a large chip missing on the bottom (right panel). Mechanically excellent. The relined case is good with a missing latch, loose hinges, one broken hinge and minor handling/storage marks and staining on the faux leather. The outside of the lid has the initials "NW" hand marked in the area where an initial oval was once attached.
