Description:

At the heart of the grouping is a signed statement (translation included) from one Frieda Zycheski, housekeeper of Goering's Obersalzberg estate, given in May 1985. According to Mrs. Zycheski, both the carving set and the glass jar in this lot are related to the Jadghuette Roeth, Goering's personal hunting retreat in the Bavarian Alps. Like many prominent Nazi Party members, Goering procured vacation property in the vicinity of Berchtesgaden, home of Hitler's infamous "Eagle's Nest", turning the region into a high security home away from home. In addition to "Landhaus Goering" (the main estate, Mrs. Zycheski's workplace), there was also the Hunting Lodge in Roeth, near the Konigsee lake. Towards the end of the war Roeth was shut down, and the contents evacuated to the house of Goering's adjutant. The adjutant's house survived the war, and in what turned out to be a lifelong arrangement Mrs. Zycheski and her family set up shop there, claiming a number of Goering's household goods for their own. 1) Hand-blown glass jar or decanter with stein-style hinged lid, 12 inches tall with a pewter hinged glass lid decorated with a three dimensional ibex and inscribed "Waidmannsheil dem Reichsjaegermeister - Jagdhuette Roeth/1936" (Huntsman's Salute to the National Hunting Master - Hunting Lodge Roth/1936). Per Mrs. Zycheski, he item was prepared by the "beater's association" (hired members of a hunting party responsible for flushing game out for the hunters) as a gift to commemorate Goering's role in repopulating the ibex in the region. 2) Anton Wingen Jr. table carving set. Consisting of a knife (13 inch overall, 7 1/2 inch blade), two-tined fork (11 1/4 inch overall, 4 inch tines) and a sharpener (12 1/2 inch overall, 7 1/4 inch rod), all three feature stag handles and metal pommel caps engraved with Goering's personal coat of arms, and set in a green cloth lined black leatherette case with "Jagdhuette Roeth" on a ribbon inside the lid. Per Mrs. Zycheski, this one was among several carving sets made for Roeth, but she believed this one was ordered through Goering's secretary instead of through a hunting accessory company. 3) Other related items included with the lot are a 1936 vintage photo of the hunting lodge set in a finely carved 17 x 14 1/2 inch hardwood frame, custom transport cases for the photo and the jar, a "Jagdhuette Roeth" marked folder containing Mrs. Zycheski's testimony and images of Goering, and three books; "Goering's Reich" by Knopf & Martens (in German), "The Obersalzberg and the Third Reich" by Verlag Plenk, and "Inside Hitler's Mountain" by Brierl and translated by McGeogh. The last book is of particular note, as Mrs. Zycheski provides testimony of Goering's final days in Bavaria, when he was detained by the SS under accusation of high treason following an attempt to assert himself as Hitler's successor in the last days of the Third Reich.

Rating Definition:

1) Very good, showing light wear and handling consistent with use, in particular light scratches on the underside from hard surface contact. 2) As 1, with mild sharpening of the knife and some wear and tear on the interior of the case from contact with the utensils. 3) The other items are in good condition, with some wear on the frame and papers goods. All the documents and books are in very good condition.
