Description:

Produced in military configuration but without the usual "eagle" and "WaA" acceptance stamps, this Luger is marked with an "A" on the barrel, "Üb/1938" on the chamber, "byf" on the front toggle link, "S/42" on the rear link and "Üb/A" branded and filled in white on the left grip panel. The "Üb" (Übung/Test) markings are associated with two kinds of pistols, both associated with Mauser's internal operations. The first is pistols that were fitted with specially ported barrels for use in conjunction with a pressure test jig for ammunition (with this pistol fitted with a normal replacement barrel later and the "A" indicating "abaendern" (modified/altered). The second are pistols assembled from spare components as practice pistols for the factory marksmen who would test fire the Lugers being submitted for Army inspection, who were expected to put 5 out of 8 rounds in a 6.7 inch circle at 50 meters off a bench rest (with "A" indicating "Anschuss" (targeting/shot placement). With straw finished small parts and a nickel finished alloy base magazine marked "42".

Rating Definition:

Very good as assembled by the factory using a mixture of parts. 80% of the blue finish remains. It shows edge wear, spotting, and variable color between parts. Some components have been renumbered to match. The grips are fine and have some dents and flat spots. Mechanically fine.
