Description:

This Model 1892 was manufactured in 1900. The two-line address is marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight, and "38 W.C.F." is at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/maker/1884 patent date, and the serial number is on the underside of the receiver. It features a dovetailed German silver blade front sight, adjustable buckhorn rear sight, blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate; and is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate. The accompanying Cody Museum letter states that the serial number was applied on November 11, 1900, (Winchester dates of manufacture book shows 1897), and verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on February 2, 1901, and shipped in order number 94646 on April 9, 1901.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 70% original blue finish overall with some muzzle and edge wear, a smooth gray patina on the upper tang, and some thinning and areas of smooth gray patina on the receiver. There are traces of original case colors on the hammer and lever with a smooth, mottled, silver gray patina on the balance. The buttplate has a smooth brownish gray patina. The refinished wood only shows a few minor handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
