Description:

Manufactured from 1891 to 1897, this example exhibits a factory floral scroll and game scene panel engraving. The receiver features a fine floral scroll engraving on a dot background and scroll borders. The left side of the receiver incorporates a game scene engraving inside a circular panel. The game scene is that of a stag in a wooded scene. The game scene is similar to the No. 1 engraving pictured in Brophy's book "Marlin Firearms." A geometric line engraving surrounds the hammer. The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY." The upper tang is correctly without model markings. The top barrel flat is stamped with the second variation address/patent dates marking: "MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A./PAT'D NOV. 19. 1878. APRIL. 2. 1889. AUG. 12. 1890. MARCH 1, 1892." Blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate. Mounted with a nicely figured multi-point checkered forearm and "S" shaped pistol grip stock fitted with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle retains traces of original blue finish and original case colors in the protected areas, otherwise a smooth dark patina. The wood is fine with a hairline crack on the forearm (underside), some worn checkering and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
