Description:

This Model 1866 saddle ring carbine was manufactured circa 1869 and subsequently custom engraved in the 20th Century. Although unsigned, the engraving on this carbine was performed by one of his apprentices with this same exact pattern shown on page 119 of the reference book "The Winchester Book" by Madis. This pattern of engraving covers over 50% of the receiver and features a very nice vine and scroll pattern on both sides with a light punch dot background. The left side has an expanded four-leaf clover center panel with a geometric border pattern while the right side has a large blank center ribbon flanked by a double heart pattern. The underside of the receiver has a complementary type scroll engraved pattern, while the top of the receiver has a geometric type pattern. The carbine has a round barrel and full length magazine and the barrel is fitted with the first style upper barrel band with integral front sight blade and modern replacement rear, two leaf "rifle" rear sight. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is completely unmarked, and the serial number "47953 is stamped in block numerals on the lower tang behind the trigger. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut, and the brass crescent buttplate has a hinged trapdoor.

Rating Definition:

Good as custom engraved of an old period refinish blue on the barrel and magazine tube, now having faded out somewhat with general light pitting up and down both the barrel and magazine tube. Around the rear sight are it does show some light vise marks. The receiver and side plates still retains their nice aged mustard yellow patina finish overall with clear and very distinct engraving overall. The stock and forend are both in good condition showing refinish with some wood loss around the tangs, with only minor handing marks on the sides. A very nice looking 1866 saddle ring carbine with a period engraved Nimschke pattern custom engraving overall.
