The factory letter confirms the serial number was applied on November 23, 1897, and the rifle was received in the warehouse on February 8, 1898, and shipped in order number 3339 on February 24 as a .32-40 rifle with special order #3 weight, 30 inch, 1/2 octagon barrel; set triggers, checkered pistol grip stock, and "Lyman rear cup disc" and "Lyman front #7" sights. This rifle also has a special order nickel-plated Swiss buttplate with square tang and fancy grade XXX walnut with high polish piano finish that are not mentioned in the letter but are correct. The barrel has a Lyman windgauge globe front sight and a sporting style buckhorn rear sight with screw-adjustable center insert. A mid-range Vernier peep sight is mounted on the receiver tang. The schnabel forearm tip has an ebony inlay, and the pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "32-40" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The serial number "80812" is roll-stamped on the lower tang between the tang screws. The half-octagon barrel has the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The receiver, breechblock, hammer and lever are color casehardened. The set triggers have a niter blue finish.

Near new. This rifle is all original and retains 99% plus of the original blue and vivid color casehardened finish. The markings are crisp. The receiver, breechblock, hammer and lever all have vivid case colors. The double set triggers retain all of the fire blue finish. The nickel-plated Swiss buttplate has a few scattered spots of flaking on the lower tang and edges but retains 97% of the original plated finish. The stock and forearm are both in excellent plus condition with perfect checkered panels. This is a near new example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Special Sporting rifle with numerous special order features.
