The Cody letter describes this rifle, as: Rifle, 44 caliber, Octagon barrel, Plain trigger, Checkered stock" and "Pistol grip" and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on August 22, 1898. The 24-inch, full octagon barrel has standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and buckhorn sporting style front sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. Special order pistol grip stock and forearm are deluxe, fancy grade walnut with "Style H" checkered panels and a semi-gloss piano finish. The pistol grip has a black, hard rubber cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The barrel, full length magazine, receiver and bolt have the Winchester charcoal blue finish. The loading gate is fire blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "MODEl 1892./-WINCHESTER-/PAT. OCT. 14. 1884." in three lines.

Very fine. 85% of the blue is present on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap. The Winchester legend and caliber markings are sharp. The receiver retains 60% of the original blue finish. The finish on the sides and top of the receiver is thin and the bottom and forward edges have a silver-gray patina. The bolt has 90% of the blue finish. The blue on the extractor has faded to a blue-gray finish. 40% of the fire blue is present on the loading gate. The hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate have 60% of the muted case colors. The highly figured, fancy grade, walnut stock and forearm are both in fine condition and retain close to 85% of the reoiled piano finish and a few, very minor, handling marks. The checkering is sharp with light-moderate handling wear. This is a very fine example of a scarce special order documented antique Winchester Deluxe Model 1892 Fancy Sporting Rifle.
