Description:

This rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. This rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this rifle as: "Rifle, Casehardened, Barrel shape: Octagon, Plain trigger, Graduated Peep & Winchester Combination sights safety, Checkered stock with pistol grip 1/2" more drop," and "14 1/4" long stock". The Cody letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on September 8, 1881. The rifle has the Winchester blue finish on the barrel and full length magazine. The dust cover, dust cover rail, loading gate cover and bolt have are fiery niter blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and special order pistol grip stock are highly figured, "XXXX", fancy grade walnut with high polish piano finish and Winchester Style H checkering. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The full octagon barrel has a rare and distinctive blued steel front sight blade with folding, globe type cover and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" at the top of the leaf and graduated to "10". A folding graduated peep sight with 50 minute graduations is mounted on the receiver tang. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor, and the butt trap contains a four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S- IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tag screw. All deluxe Winchester Model 1876 rifles are rare, but rifles with unique, documented, special order features like this stock with custom dimensions are exceptionally rare.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This stunning rifle is all original. The barrel and magazine tube retains 95% of the original blue finish with traces of edge wear at the muzzle and some thinning on the magazine band. The Winchester legend is extremely crisp. The dust cover and loading gate cover have 98% the original nitre blue finish while the dust cover rail and bolt show expected finish wear but retain the niter blue. The receiver and forearm cap show only minimal wear and retain 90% plus of the original casehardened finish with very strong case colors. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever are more muted, but they retain close to 95% finish. The buttplate has 85% of the case colors with some finish loss and traces of light pitting on the contact points of the toe and heel. The special front sight, standard rear sight and special order tang sight are in excellent condition and retain close to 95% of the original blue finish. The highly figured forearm and special order pistol grip stock are in excellent condition and retain close to 95% of the high polish piano finish. Wear is limited to some minor finish loss on the stock and forearm at the junction with the receiver and a few very minor handling marks on the sides of the stock and forearm. The checkered panels on the stock and forearm are sharp. This is an exceptional example of a rare deluxe Winchester Model 1876 "Centennial Rifle" with documented custom stock. It would be hard to improve on this rare and stunning Model 1876 rifle.
