Description:

The factory letter confirms the serial number was applied on November 4, 1895, and the rifle was received and shipped on the same day with a .22 Short, #2 weight, 26 inch half octagon barrel; plain trigger, and " '86 size butt plate." It was repaired and returned December 24, 1895, and December 4, 1901. It has a Lyman folding combination front sight and a spirit level in the rear sight dovetail. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the size designation "2" just ahead of the lower flat. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.- " ahead of the rear sight dovetail. "22 SHORT" is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The receiver tang is fitted with a Lyman mid-range Vernier peep sight. The trigger face is knurled. The lower tang is roll-stamped: "PAT. OCT. 7th 79" behind the trigger and has the serial number "73888" stamped between the tang screws. The barrel has the Winchester charcoal blue finish and a bright muzzle. The receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are nicely figured American walnut with a high polish piano finish. The forearm has the standard schnabel tip with ebony inlay.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The rifle retains 98% plus of the original blue and vivid casehardened finish. The barrel markings are crisp. The receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate have fiery case colors. The stock and forearm retain 98% of the high polish piano finish. This is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall rifle with special order half octagon barrel, special order buttplate, and deluxe walnut stock and forearm.
