Description:

This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare deluxe factory engraved and highly embellished Winchester Model 90 slide action rifle that was manufactured in late 1926. This is a third model takedown version which features a locking cut made on the front top of the receiver to allow the breech bolt to lock externally. This beautiful rifle has the superb factory No. 9 Deluxe engraving pattern (as shown on page 229, 301 and 303 of the book "Winchester Engraving" by R.L. Wilson) that feature a beautiful circular engraved pattern on each side of the receiver, with the left side showing a running deer, while the right side shows a mirror image of the deer standing; both are in a wooded country scene and are flanked by beautiful large Ulrich style "S" scroll engraving with a fine line border, intermixed with a zig-zag, wavy pattern with heavy punch dot shading. The engraving was also applied on the top, front edge of the upper tang, behind the hammer, the heel of the buttplate and front edge of the lower tang. This engraving was a very popular and highly desirable pattern that was used by many of the master engravers in the late 1800s up through the 1920s. Although this is a typical John Ulrich pattern, he had stopped engraving for the Winchester factory at this time; however, this could have been engraved in an Ulrich pattern by either William Gough or Angelo Stokes. Both were actively engraving for Winchester starting in the early/mid 1920s. The rifle has a beautiful fancy grade straight grip walnut stock and a standard 12 groove walnut slide handle. The octagon barrel has the later pattern Winchester two-line address and patent dates followed by "--MOD. 90---" and the caliber markings "22W.R.F.", all offset on the left side of the barrel. The barrel is fitted with the special order 3/4 length magazine tube. The barrel is fitted with the standard Mod 90 adjustable rear sight and a special order Lyman folding Globe front sight, which features a pinhead front sight post with a bead. The top of the tang has also been fitted with a late production Lyman number 2A combination rear tang sight with the short staff, large merit eyecup with the locking feature on the left side. The top of the sight base is marked "LYMAN/Middlefield/ CONN. U.S.A." The barrel and receiver both carry the proper Winchester "WP" proofmarks. The assembly number "152" is stamped on the upper tang stock cut out, buttplate and left side of the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Excellent to like new condition with 99% of the original Winchester factory blue finish overall with only minor handling marks on the metal and beautiful and very detailed factory engraving. The wood components are also in excellent like new condition with only a couple of very minor scratches/handling marks on the sides of the buttstock. Just a beautiful example of a super rare deluxe special order Winchester factory engraved Model 90 slide action rifle.
