Description:

This is a Winchester Model 1890 that was manufactured in 1902 and has markings associated with the famed 101 Ranch. Dating back to at least 1881, the 101 Ranch in Oklahoma eventually covered more than 100,000 acres before the land was divided beginning in the 1930s. During its heyday the 101 managed a diversified agricultural and livestock business, even experimental crops. But the 101 earned most of its notoriety from its wild west shows that it ran from 1905 to 1931 with an interruption during the First World War. Among their talented participants were the likes of Geronimo, Will Rogers, Bill Picket, and the Chilean sharpshooter and trick shot horseman Carlos Chavez. The right side of the receiver is nicely engraved "101 Ranch," and the right side of the buttstock has a 101 Ranch color graphic outlined with eight brass rivets. The buttstock has been modified to accept a replacement buttplate likely done during its time at the 101 Ranch. It is equipped with a dovetail front sight (modified) and elevation adjustable rear sight. The barrel has the Winchester legend on the upper left flat and the Winchester factory oval and re-barreled proofs are stamped on the top flat at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model/patent marking, and the serial number is found on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The rifle has a smooth brown patina mixed with traces of original blue finish. A protective coat of varnish has been applied to the metal and wood surfaces. The wood is fair with the stock cracked near the toe, a small missing chip on the wrist (right side) and some minor pressure dents and scratches. Most of the graphic remains. Safety notch worn out, otherwise mechanically fine. A unique piece of Winchester and wild west show memorable from the famed 101 Ranch.
