Description:

Manufactured in the 1860s to the 1880s, this is an excellent example of a Peabody Martini "What Cheer" long range target rifle. It is equipped with a spirit level front sight and a long range tang mounted peep sight. The peep sight is numbered to the gun. The front sight has the number "97." The top barrel flat has the one-line address along with "44 CAL/100 GRS." The receiver is factory engraved "What Cheer" on the left side and "PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS" on the right side. Mounted on a multi-point checkered forearm and straight grip stock. The forearm has a iron end cap, and the stock has a smooth iron buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The barrel retains 90% plus thinning original blue finish showing a couple patches of minor pitting and some minor scratches. The remaining metal surfaces retain 85% vivid original case colors. The wood is very fine showing some minor pressure dents and scratches and a few blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This Peabody would be an extraordinary addition to the most advanced single shot antique collection.
