Manufactured around 1875-76 and subsequently customized. It most closely matches the Mid-Range No. 2a pattern of which only 36 were manufactured: 14 at Hartford and 22 at Bridgeport. It features a lightweight tapered barrel with a globe front sight, Lawrence patent notch and folding ladder rear sight, "MID RANGE 50" on the right barrel flat, "CALIBRE 40" on top, no factory address, and the matching full serial number on the bottom; matching numbered schnabel forearm with custom checkering and a bone diamond inlay on the bottom at the center, standard patent marking on the left side of the receiver, serial number on top partially covered by the unusual peep sight which has a Vernier style peep/elevator on a drift adjustable base, matching numbered lock, plain trigger, and smooth straight wrist stock with plated sporting buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 30% of the faded blue finish, mottled gray and brown patina and traces of original case colors on the balance, an imperfection/crack in the left side at the breech, 25% of the plating on the buttplate, and some light spotting. The buttstock is fine. The forearm has crisp period custom carving, some small chips in the tip, and minor dings. The buttstock has several dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
