Description:

Measures roughly 66 by 42 inches. The 13 stars are configured in the 3-2-3-2-3 pattern. It is marked "USS WABASH" along the hoist. Its construction is primarily hand sewn other than some of the machine sewn repairs. The U.S.S. Wabash was a steam screw frigate launched on October 24, 1855, and first commissioned on August 18, 1856. It served as flagship of Commodore Hiram Paulding's Home Squadron in 1856-1858, the flagship of Commodore Elie A. F. La Vallette's Mediterranean Squadron 1858- 1859 during which George Dewey served on board as a midshipman, 1861-1865 in the Civil War in both the North and South Atlantic Blockading Squadrons during which its most notable Civil War action was the assault on Fort Fisher in the winter of 1864-1865, remained part of the reserve fleet until it was recommissioned on October 24, 1871, as the flag ship of Rear Admiral James Alden, commander of the Mediterranean Squadron, decommissioned again on April 25, 1874, used as a receiving ship from 1876 to 1912, and finally sold on November 15, 1912, to Boston Iron and Metal Company who burned it and scrapped the metal. The flag possibly dates to the 1870s-1880s (we cannot guarantee!) when the ship was part of the Mediterranean Squadron or serving as a receiving ship in Boston Harbor.

Rating Definition:

Fair with thread bare sections, patched and stitched repairs, a piece absent from the lower tip of the fly edge, and some tears.
