Description:

Patterned after a French design, the Model 1832 was intended to serve as a utility tool as much as a defensive weapon with a heavy weight blade suitable for chopping brush to build barricades or clear a path for a cannon. Measuring 25 1/4 inches overall, with a 19 1/4 inch straight triple fuller blade, bearing the Ames "scroll" address on one side and "US/CGS/1862" over "1" on the reverse. Single piece cast brass hilt with "C.G.S" on the side of the crossguard, a scaled grip and American Eagles on the pommel. With a fine dark brown leather scabbard marked "H" on the tip.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The bright high polish blade shows mild spotting and handling, with signs of restriking of the inspector and date markings. It is unclear about the overstrike on the date (see above), but appears to be of the period. The hilt shows a mellow aged patina with light verdigris around the top of the guard, with a darker patina to the scabbard fittings and some light cracks and scuffs on the otherwise solid leather.
